Burlington County had the lowest average county tax in New Jersey again last year, according to the latest New Jersey Department of Community Affairs data.

Released earlier this month, the DCA data revealed the county portion of the average residential tax bill for a home assessed at $240,847 in Burlington County was $1,069 in 2023, which was the lowest among New Jersey’s 21 counties.

The next lowest was Morris County with an average county tax of $1,382. The average across the state was $1,746.

Burlington County also had the lowest average county tax in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, according to the DCA data.

“From Day 1, our Commissioner Board has prioritized affordability and the DCA data once again shows how sound fiscal management and efficient government can make a difference for all our residents,” said Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson. “Our county’s record stands apart and is helping to make Burlington County an ideal destination for all people, regardless of their economic status. We pledge to continue to keep a close eye on our County finances because we know every tax dollar entrusted to us is essential and that the programs and services they help fund matter.”

County taxes made up 14.3% of the total tax bill in 2023. School taxes amounted to about 64.3% of the total tax bill, and municipal taxes amounted to 21.3%.  All three percentages were nearly identical to those calculated by DCA in 2022.

The average total property tax bill in Burlington County last year, which includes county taxes and all school and municipal taxes, was $7,459, according to the DCA.

In addition to the DCA data, Moody’s Investors Services has repeatedly cited Burlington County’s budgeting, costs controls and “strong financial management” in reports maintaining the County’s outstanding credit rating. The agency’s latest report last November also cited the County’s “deep bench of civil servants and outside professionals” as helping to strengthen the County’s finances and deliver services.

Among the County’s most recent accomplishments was the launch of a new grant program to aid veteran-owned and miliary-owned small businesses

In 2023, the County also boosted Burlington County’s first-time home buyer assistance program and emergency repairs and home improvements programs to assist low- and moderate-income homeowners.

“In Burlington County, we’ve preserved thousands of acres of farmland and open space, and created parks, playgrounds and trails that are accessible and attractive destinations for residents of all ages and abilities. We’ve also improved public safety and promoted small businesses and public health,” Hopson said. “All this is possible because of the hard work, talent and dedication of our County’s staff, employees and leadership teams, but also because of the cooperation and support we’ve received from our partners in all levels of government, the business community and nonprofit providers and service agencies.”
