[ARCHIVED] Burlington County Offering Free Tree Recycling at County Fairgrounds and Resource Recovery Complex

Soon, ornaments and decorations will be taken down and put away, and some families will wonder what to do with their Christmas tree when the holidays are over.

This year, Burlington County residents have additional options to recycle their live Christmas trees.

Residents can bring undecorated trees to the Burlington County Fairgrounds at 1990 Jacksonville-Jobstown Road in Springfield now through January 11th to have them mulched by the Burlington County Parks System. Residents bringing trees should enter the park at Gate 2 and place trees within the enclosed barricade.

No artificial, bagged or flocked trees will be accepted.  All stands, lights, tinsel, wires, ornaments and garland must be removed.

Trees will be mulched on Jan. 11 during the inaugural “Mulch Fest” from 10 AM to 2 PM. Residents are invited to come and take mulch for their home gardens or landscaping project. Bring your own tools and containers for mulch.

“With the holidays just ending, many residents will be packing up their decorations and taking down their trees,” said Burlington County Commissioner Tom Pullion, the liaison to the Department of Solid Waste and Recycling. “Bringing your trees to the Fairgrounds for Mulch Fest gives the trees a second life and helps keep our county green. Our residents are invited to take home free mulch, and any remaining supplies will be used in our County parks.”

Recycling trees also helps reduce waste in the County landfill and saves towns and property taxpayers from paying larger landfill fees.

More than 67 million pounds of recyclables have been collected in Burlington County this year through Nov. 30, saving towns over $3.4 million in landfill waste fees.

In addition to the Fairgrounds drop-off, live trees can also be brought to the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex at 22000 Burlington-Columbus Road in Florence to be chipped and composted.

The County’s free “Treecycle” service is offered at the complex Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 5 PM and Saturdays from 7 AM to noon for live trees only.

The complex cannot recycle artificial, bagged or flocked trees. As with the Fairgrounds drop-off, all stands, lights, tinsel, wires, ornaments and garland must be removed.

Holiday lights can be recycled by dropping them off at the Resource Recovery Complex. They cannot be discarded in recycling cans.

Several municipalities also offer curbside collection and/or a drop-off sites for discarded trees. Residents should contact their town to verify when collections occur and learn about any special requirements or restrictions.

Information about curbside tree collections is also available on the county’s Recycling Coach app. The free app has information about the County’s recycling program and accepted materials, as well as updates and alerts about collection schedules for each town and tips and advice about recycling.

The Recycling Coach app can be downloaded from Apple or the GooglePlay app store.

For more information, call 609-499-1001 or email recycle@co.burlington.nj.us.

“Recycling is a proven property tax saver and a service we are proud to offer to all 40 municipalities free-of-charge, but we need our residents to help by taking the time to recycle the right materials,” said Commissioner Randy Brolo. “Downloading the Recycling Coach app is a great way to stay up to date with the recycling schedule and to understand exactly what can and cannot be recycled.”
