October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in honor of the occasion the Burlington County Health Department is organizing a special event designed to share information about available resources and the importance of early detection.

The inaugural Breast Cancer Brunch & Learn will be held Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Burlington County Lyceum of History and Natural Sciences, 307 High Street, Mount Holly. Attendees will be served a light brunch and have opportunities to connect and learn from breast cancer survivors, supporters and health care professionals.

Free mammograms from Jefferson Health staff will also be offered for both insured and uninsured patients who live and work in Burlington County.

The event is free, but registration is required as space is limited.

“There are over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, and I am one of them,” said Burlington County Commissioner Director Felicia Hopson. “The disease can be beaten, but early detection is key. Mammograms and screenings save lives, so we continue to encourage residents to get screened and show support for those battling breast cancer, along with breast cancer survivors and those who have lost a loved one to the disease. The Health Department’s upcoming Breast Cancer Brunch is a fantastic way to raise awareness and make strides with prevention and early detection.”

To register for the Breast Cancer Brunch and Learn, go to:  https://burlingtoncountynj.formstack.com/forms/bchd_breast_cancer_event_participant_registration_form

Registration for a mammogram from Jefferson Health must be done separately at https://burlingtoncounty.formstack.com/forms/breast_cancer_event_mammogram_screening .

The mammograms are reserved for residents 40 or older who have not had a mammogram in the last 365 days and are not showing any symptoms.

Patients with a primary care physician should bring a prescription. Residents without a primary care prescription or insurance are still eligible for mammograms. They can receive a prescription at the event.

There will also be workshops featuring health care professionals and breast cancer survivors, information tables from providers and advocates, plus raffles and door prizes.

“Good government means promoting good public health and making sure preventative care and screenings like mammograms are available to all residents, including those who lack insurance,” said Burlington County Commissioner Tyler Burrell, the liaison to the Health Department. “Whether you’re a breast cancer survivor, supporter or someone seeking resources, the upcoming Breast Cancer Brunch is an opportunity to help raise awareness, learn about resources, and show support for fellow community members.”
