[ARCHIVED] Burlington County Road Crews Tackling Pothole Repairs

We all know that the winter season causes potholes, but Burlington County road crews are busy making repairs on County highways.

This year’s season has already been a challenging one due to the fluctuating temperatures and precipitation. The freezing and thawing of moisture beneath asphalt roads is what typically creates potholes.

“Anyone who has lived in the Northeast region knows that winter storms and deep freezes that often follow them can take a toll on asphalt roads,” said Burlington County Commissioner Tom Pullion, the liaison to the Department of Public Works and Division of Roads and Bridges. “While there is little we can do to stop potholes from forming, our roads crews are already working diligently to repair these hazards on County roadways. We are asking motorists to help out by reporting any problem spots they encounter where potholes have formed on County roads.”

Residents can report the location of potholes to the County’s Potholes Hotline by leaving a message at 609-265-5021 or by emailing Highway@co.burlington.nj.us. Reports can also be made with an online form at https://burlingtoncountynj.formstack.com/forms/report_a_pothole .

A list of County roads in all 40 municipalities is available online at https://www.co.burlington.nj.us/917/County-Roads .

The hotline is checked daily so road crews can respond quickly to problem spots.

Among the equipment employed by the County to make repairs is an automated pothole fixing truck. The vehicle was purchased by the County in 2016 and allows the road repairs to be made efficiently with less disruption of traffic. The road crews also use three hotbox asphalt trailers to keep asphalt hot so repairs can be done efficiently in multiple locations of the county.

“Burlington County maintains more than 500 miles of roads and keeping them safe and in good condition is one of our County’s top priorities,” said Pullion. “Last year, crews filled more than 17,000 potholes and used more than 800 tons of patch material. That’s a tremendous accomplishment that shows how lucky our County is to have such experienced and dedicated workers to respond and repair potholes quickly.”
