Public Health Response to Zika Virus in Burlington County

Communications:

● BCHD will use the communication platforms it has available to reach key populations to share important public health messages. This includes travelers, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, physicians, and the general public.

Surveillance for Human Cases:

● BCHD in conjunction with NJDOH conducts surveillance for Zika cases.

Vector Surveillance and Control:

● Burlington County Mosquito Control has mapped the geographic ranges of Aedes albopictus larval sources for the years 2011-2015. Population density and seasonal distribution of all mosquitoes (including Aedes albopictus) in Burlington County has been determined and was published in 2015. ● BCHD and Mosquito Control maintain direct lines of communication for timely vector control efforts for each probable or confirmed Zika virus case residence locations (street address, regardless of infection origin [i.e., including travel-associated cases])

Pregnant Woman Outreach:

● Zika virus infection in pregnant women is associated with birth defects and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

● The BCHD Health Alert Network/NJLINCS has contact information for medical providers, obstetrics and gynecologists, WIC, social service organizations and faith based organizations and provides important information to these and other agencies.
