History

The Burlington County Police Academy opened in 1965, providing law enforcement in-service training courses to municipal and county Police Officers. Later in December 1967, the State of New Jersey Police Training Commission certified the Burlington County Police Academy as a provider of Basic Police Officer training courses.

First Graduating Class

Basic Police Officer Class Number 1, began training on January 15, 1968 with 18 police recruits. The Academy was then located at the abandoned NIKE site in Marlton, New Jersey and the course curriculum consisted of approximately 300 hours of state certification training over 7 weeks.

On December 23, 1975, the Police Academy moved to the Burlington County Public Safety Center in Westampton Township where it remained for 23 years.

Relocation

In January 1999, the Police Academy again relocated to the East Campus of the Burlington County Community College in Pemberton Township where the Basic Police course curriculum consisted of approximately 800 hours of state certification training over 20 weeks.

Last Class

In April 2010, after the conclusion of its 98 Basic Recruit class, the Burlington County Police Academy graduated its final Basic Police recruit class. The Burlington County Police Academy took great pride in having provided the citizens of the State of New Jersey with approximately 2,858 of the finest Police Officers over a 43 year span.

New Name

As a result, the Burlington County Police Academy was renamed The Burlington County Law Enforcement Training Program. As we embark on this new direction, we embrace the very principles that this program was founded upon by continuing to provide the citizens of the State of New Jersey with highly educated police officers by offering the most advanced, relevant, and state-of the-art in-service training in the state.
